Massive Rejection of the Light Rail About 450 concerned ratepayers rallied at the Arts Centre tonight Wednesday 11 April 2012 to listen to informed speakers in relation to calling for a moratorium of the project. A motion was overwhelmingly carried to approach the new State Government to investigate more cost effective and beneficial options for the Gold Coast. Alan Midwood was the opening speaker and outlined the statistics which painted a very damning picture for the viability of the project. Alan was supported by long standing Southport businessman Ian Solomon, ex mayor Lex Bell and the founder of PRD Gordon Douglas. Councillor Ted Shepherd was invited to attend to speak in favour of the project but apparently declined. President Tom Bleier opened proceedings with an analogy on the cost of Light Rail which has now blown out from the original $300M to now being $1.8Billion with more blowouts certain. He explained that if we timed 1.8billion in seconds we would switch the clock off in 57 years obviously supporting th efact that this light rail project will be paid for by generations to come. A petition was presented on the night. Many of those present called for all candidates in the upcoming election to state their position on the Light Rail. President Tom assured that this information would be sought as soon as possible. Please check out our Facebook page called “Residents and Ratepayers Gold Coast”.
